The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis, also known as a degenerative joint disease (DJD). As people get older, they are more likely to develop osteoarthritis. Changes in osteoarthritis typically occur gradually over many years, with rare exceptions. Inflammation and injury to the joint cause bony changes, deterioration of tendons and ligaments, and cartilage breakdown resulting in pain, swelling, and joint deformity. On X-ray, approximately 80% of older adults aged 55 and up have evidence of osteoarthritis. An estimated 60% of these people have symptoms. When compared to men, postmenopausal women have a higher incidence of knee osteoarthritis.
